VILLAGE SCHOOLS OF THE BIBLE
Advanced Classes - Winter/Spring 2009

Isaiah: The Course
Often described as the “Bible within the Bible,” Isaiah becomes the most quoted Old Testament book in the New Testament.  Within its pages the student is exposed to some of the most stirring portraits of God found in the Bible.  The prophet also accurately defines the person and ministry of the ‘Servant’, whom we know as Jesus.  And there is a wonderful sense of the sovereign control of God over the events of this world until the very end of time.  Homework assignments will be given

Malachi to Matthew
As a person begins reading the New Testament, several facts emerge that are not discussed in the Old Testament.  Who are the Pharisees and from where did they come?  Who are the Sadducees?  From where did the concept of water baptism originate?  How and when did the Romans make their entrance onto the landscape of Palestine?  This class will provide answers to these and other questions about the time between the testaments.

Israel Today: A Biblical, Historical and Prophetic Perspective
To better understanding Israel and the Middle East today, we shall look at the promises God made to Abraham; the impact of Islam, the legacy of the Byzantine Christians and Crusaders; and the founding of Israel. We shall then examine passages that help us grasp what God is yet to accomplish in the Middle East.

Philippians:  A Love Letter in Four Parts
Paul’s letter to the Philippians is one of the most personal epistles written.  In it we see the Apostle laying his heart open to this little congregation which means so much to him.  This class will consist of exegetically gleaning four of the prominent themes in Philippians from the four chapters of this epistle, Paul’s Passion, Pattern, Purpose, and Peace.  Students will read the book and respond in four personal one-page reaction papers.
Instructor:  Doug Foreman

New Testament Overview
This class will cover each New Testament book, the historical events that give them context, and specific questions that help draw out the overarching principles contained in them. We will find ways to use this material that can help people in their daily lives. The course will make use of Jensen’s Bible Study Charts.
Instructor:  Highland Goodman

The Epistle of James
James covers the spectrum of Christian ethics concerning our walk with Jesus Christ on a daily basis. James is an eye opener into the truths about our walk before God. It reminds one of the book of Proverbs in the Old Testament. James shows us how to live the life of the overcomer and be victorious in our service for Christ.
Instructor:  Rev. Gordon Davis
