BIBLE TRIVIA CHALLENGE
August 2009- Question 11
The Days of Israel’s monarchy certainly provided for some very interesting history. The trivia question for this issue has several parts, each focusing upon a particular king. You are to identify the king being described.
Be sure you give the references for each answer. Enjoy your time in the Word. Hopefully the stories of these kings will remind you of eternal truths.
We had eight individuals who responded with correct answers. Congratulations to each of you. The winner, whose name was drawn out of the proverbial basket by Pamela, is Doris Frazier from Boone, Iowa. Yes, she is my Mom. I think she is the third trivia winner from that community.
This will end our series of Trivia Challenges. Thank you to each one who has been so diligent in responding to each Challenge. I trust you have been blessed as you have searched for the answers. Keep on digging…there are so many more nuggets to be found.
May 2009- Question 10
The Bible uses the image of a lion often in describing those who are opposed to God. But, three men are cited as having killed a lion. Who are these three men? Give Scripture references.
Answer: Twenty-one readers submitted the correct answers: Samson (Judges 14:6), David (1 Samuel 17:34-36), and Benaiah (2 Samuel 23:20). Our congratulations to Beverly Sorensen from Annandale, MN, whose name was drawn from among those who responded with the correct response.
February 2009- Question 9
The first question for 2009 focused upon resurrection. The Bible records the stories of five men who were used to raise others from the dead. Two of those men had the unique privilege of causing at least one other person to be raised even after they themselves had died. Who were these two individuals? Give Scripture references.
Answer: Nine individuals submitted the correct response. The five men were: Elijah, Elisha, Jesus Christ, Peter and Paul. The two who raised individuals following their own death were: Elisha (2 Kings 13:20-21) and Jesus Christ (Matthew 27:52). Who these saints were is not clearly stated in the Scriptures. It is possible that they were believers in Christ who had died during His lifetime. But, regardless of who they were, the Bible tells us they became witnesses of what God had done for them.
Our congratulations to Gordy and Debbie Nelson from Darwin, MN, whose name was drawn from among those nine who responded with the correct response. Gordy and Debbie have served as our class coordinators in the Dassel, MN area for several years. Presently they are teaching our Bible 101 class as part of their church’s adult Sunday school curriculum.
November 2008- Question 8
The final trivia question for 2008 also concerns a burial. We hear the old adage that “when you die you can’t take anything with you,” or “there are no U-Haul trailers in a funeral procession.” However, in the Bible there were three men who, when they died, took everything that they owned with them to the grave. Who were these three men? Give a Scripture reference.
Answer: Korah, Dathan and Abiram. The Scripture text is Numbers 16:31-33.
Our congratulations to Shirley Fitch, from Boone, IA, (second winner from that community) whose name was drawn from among the five who responded with the correct response.
August 2008- Question 7
When was the first deliberate cremation done in the Bible and who was cremated? Give Scripture reference. (Hint: these were not cases where a person committed suicide by setting a building on fire around him. No, I am looking for a person or persons whose bodies were deliberately burned following their deaths).
This question was submitted to me by my son-in-law. I can tell you it had me stumped, but the answer is in one of the Old Testament books.
The question in the August issue proved to be difficult. There were seven individuals who had the correct answer and six who submitted an answer that I accepted. The question was: When was the first deliberate cremation done in the Bible and who was cremated? Give Scripture reference. (Hint: these were not cases where a person committed suicide by setting a building on fire around him. No, I am looking for a person or persons whose bodies were deliberately burned following their deaths).
Answer: The correct answer is found in 1 Samuel 31:11-13 in the account of the actions of the people of Jabesh-gilead upon hearing of the death and mutilation of King Saul. They burned the bodies of Saul and his sons to prevent any further abuse by the Philistines. The other acceptable answer is found in Joshua 7:25 where the bodies of Achan and his family were burned followed their execution by stoning. The purpose of the burning of the bodies was to purge the land of the sin that Achan had brought upon it. The winner of the $25 gift certificate is: Ginger Ferrin from Plymouth, MN. Our congratulations to Ginger!
May 2008- Question 6
Name two Egyptians who opposed Moses when he requested Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go into the wilderness to worship the Lord. (Hint: Pharaoh is not one of the two). Give Scripture reference.
Answer: Jannes and Jambres. According to 2 Timothy 3:8, Jannes and Jambres were magicians in the court of Pharaoh who opposed Moses. The winner of the $25 gift card is: Dennis Prothero from Brooklyn Park, MN. Our congratulations to Dennis.
This question, like the last, seemed to be an easy challenge for many, although only ten people submitted the correct answer. (Personally I had nearly a dozen others who spoke to me in person and shared the correct answer).
February 2008- Question 5
Sometimes don’t you find it hard to get up in the morning, especially when the snow is falling and the winds are blowing? It would be so much easier to just stay in bed. And, if we had a bed like one of the kings of old, we could almost get lost in our bed. The first trivia question for 2008 is this: Identify which person in the Bible had the largest bed. It truly was a king-sized bed. And give the Scripture reference. (Hint: This is an Old Testament pagan king). Enjoy the challenge.
Answer: King Og of Bashan had a bed thirteen feet long and six feet wide, made of iron. The reference is Deuteronomy 3:11. The first question for 2008 proved to be much easier than I thought. Sixteen people submitted the correct answer. You might remember the question: The winner of the $25 gift card is: Al Sorenson who lives in Boone, Iowa. I believe he is our first out-of-state winner. So, congratulations, Al.
November 2007- Question 4
Who was the Roman Emperor when Jesus was born? Who was the Roman Emperor during the years of His ministry? Give Scripture references.
Answer: Caesar Augustus and Tiberius caesar. The final question for 2007 proved to be more difficult that I thought, as only eight people submitted the correct answer. Caesar Augustus was the Roman Emperor when Jesus was born (Luke 2:1), and Tiberius Caesar was the Roman Emperor during the years of Jesus’ ministry (Luke 3:1). The winner of the $25 gift card is: Lannie Cragg from Minnetonka, MN. Congratulations, Lannie.
August 2007- Question 3
The prophet Ezekiel is told that even if three well-known Old Testament leaders were present in Israel, they could not stay the hand of God’s judgment – they could only save themselves. Who were these three Old Testament leaders and what is the reference?
Answer: Noah, Daniel and Job. The answer is found in Ezekiel 14, verses 14 and 20. I was asked to comment about the significance of these three names. In the Old Testament each person was responsible for acting on behalf of someone else to provide for their deliverance: Noah – delivered his own family from the flood (Genesis 7:1); Daniel – delivered his friends from certain death (Daniel 2:17-18); and Job – delivered his friends from the wrath of God (Job 42:7-9). This text in Ezekiel 14 would indicate that the sinful conditions in Jerusalem were so severe that even, if Noah, Job, and Daniel were together, their requests could only result in their own deliverance, not of anyone else.
Our third question proved to be a easier than I had thought it would be. We had eighteen readers respond with the correct answer. The winner of the $25 gift card is: Beverly Sorenson from Annandale, MN. Congratulations, Beverly.
May 2007- Question 2
What Old Testament general was covered by a blanket so that his body would not deter the advancement of his troops? Please give the reference.
Answer: General Amasa, who was murdered by Joab and whose body was pulled to the side of the roadway and covered with a blanket so that the advancing troops would not stop to stare. This story is found in 2 Samuel 20:12.
Our second question proved to me a more difficult one. We had eight readers respond with an answer – but only six had the correct answer. The winner of the $25 gift card is: Jennifer Moore from Hutchinson, MN. Congratulations, Jennifer.
February 2007- Question 1
Many women are mentioned by name in the Bible. But, for only one woman does the Bible reveal her age at the time of her death. Can you name that woman?
Answer: Sarah. Sarah died at the age of 127 – found in Genesis 23:1.
There were 33 correct answers submitted. The winner of the $25 gift card is: Susan Anderson from Shoreview, MN. Congratulations, Sue! And, congratulations to all those who submitted the correct response.
